Embodiment Construction

[0033] Described below are examples of seals (and individual components of the seals) that may be used to form a seal between components in a gas turbine engine. Methods of making and using the seal are also disclosed. The seal may include a gasket base and a honeycomb structure having a plurality of cavities therein formed as a single unitary structure with the gasket base. For example, a gasket base and a honeycomb structure with adjacent cavities can be formed as a single monolithic structure using additive manufacturing. Exemplary additive manufacturing processes may include 3D printing, among others. Direct metal laser melting (DMLM) is one exemplary manufacturing technique that may be used to manufacture the seal. Powder fusion welding (sometimes referred to as laser metal deposition) is another exemplary fabrication technique that may be used to form the cavity. Binder jetting is another exemplary fabrication technique that may be used to form the cavity. The seal m...

Abstract

The invention relates to a seal in a gas turbine engine. The seal in a gas turbine engine includes a shim base and a honeycomb structure having a number of cavities are formed as a single unitary structure, for example by using additive manufacturing..

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to gas turbine engine seals, and more particularly to seals in gas turbine engines having a gasket base and a honeycomb structure with a plurality of cavities therein utilizing additive manufacturing and The gasket base is formed as a single unitary structure. Background technique [0002] Seal grooves between gas turbine engine components often have skews, misalignments, imperfections and / or cracks that can prevent effective sealing with rigid seals between the components. Thin shims can be variable enough to form a seal between components regardless of skew and misalignment, only to be easily crushed during assembly. Fabric seals are flexible and resist pinching, rather than sealing like a single gasket. Laminate seals, which are mechanically bonded gasket layers, can provide adequate sealing between components, but can still be crushed and deformed during assembly. Therefore, there is a need for a seal asse...
