Problems solved by technology

Due to their size and stiffness, current imaging probes are limited in their ability to reach certain anatomical locations
Current imaging probes are inserted through a guide wire, which can compromise the placement of the imaging probe and limit the use of the delivery catheter or catheters through which the imaging probe is inserted

Abstract

An imaging system for a patient includes an imaging probe. The imaging probe includes: an elongated shaft for insertion into a patient and including a proximal end, a distal portion, and a lumen extending between the proximal and distal portions; a rotating optical core configured to be optically and mechanically connected to the interface unit; a probe connector positioned at the proximal end of the elongated shaft and surrounding at least a portion of the rotatable optical core; and an optical assembly, Located adjacent the distal portion of the elongated shaft and the distal end of the rotatable optical core, the optical assembly is configured to direct light to tissue and collect reflected light from the tissue. A shear-thinning fluid may be provided between the elongate shaft and the rotatable optical core, for example to reduce undesired rotational changes of the rotatable optical core.
