Abstract

A stimulator and method for the treatment of refractory pain syndrome by electrical stimulation of the spinal cord are disclosed. Example methods include: positioning a first pair of implantable electrodes to dural material in an epidural space at a predetermined location proximate the subject's spinal cord; positioning a second pair of implantable electrodes at a predetermined location proximate the subject's spinal cord; dural material in the epidural space of the subject's spinal cord; and transmitting signals of the first and second frequencies through the first and second pairs of implantable electrodes, respectively, such that the signals of the first and second frequencies interfere with each other to generate at least one beat signal proximate the spinal cord of the subject. The at least one beat signal has a frequency in the range of greater than 250 Hz to about 15000 Hz.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to spinal cord stimulation, and more particularly to an apparatus and method for electrically stimulating the spinal cord using interfering current patterns for the treatment of chronic pain conditions. Background technique [0002] Electrical stimulation of the spinal cord in the back (spinal cord stimulation (SCS)) has been developed as an effective therapeutic tool for the treatment of chronic pain conditions. However, little is known about the sites of activation or the neural mechanisms evoked by SCS that reduce pain and promote functional changes in somatic and visceral structures. [0003] Spinal cord stimulation is most commonly used in patients with chronic intractable pain syndrome. It is also used to treat movement disorders and is occasionally used after a head injury. However, one complication of SCS is the adaptation, or modulation, to the stimulus signal. Companies that manufacture spinal stimu...
