Embodiment Construction

[0029] Figures 1 to 4 Collectively, various views of a device 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention are depicted for hands-free control of the flow of surgical fluid by a surgeon, such as for arthroscopic surgery. the rest of the views, Figures 5 to 11 , is a front view or a cross-sectional view, completing the visual depiction of the device 100 .

[0030] As shown, the device 100 has a body 10 that exhibits on its upper side a platform 20 for the surgeon to rest his foot during surgery. The device 100 is placed, in use, on the floor of an operating room such that the lower portion or side of the body 10 rests on the floor, in the vicinity of the surgeon where surgical fluid may collect.

[0031] The device 100 is characterized by a pedal 30 by which the device 100 is actuated by the foot by lightly depressing the pedal 30 with the pedal to extract drainage from the surgical site as required. The treads 30 generally protrude a short distance above the pl...

Abstract

A hand-free arthroscopic outflow control device (100) having a body (10) featuring a multiport valve body comprising a sleeve (50) fitted with a piston (40) actuated by a pedal (30), the sleeve (50) communicating with a surgical site inflow port (52), a surgical theatre inflow port (54) and an outflow port (56) disposed between these respective inflow ports (52,54), so that the piston (40) can bepositioned alternatively to vent the outflow port (56) under suction by drawing from one only of the surgical site inflow port (52) and the surgical theatre inflow port (54).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to arthroscopic surgery, and surgical-related techniques characterized by minimal invasiveness, such as laparoscopy, endoscopy and similar procedures. technical background [0002] Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique performed on joints using an arthroscope, which is an endoscope inserted through a small incision into the joint. [0003] Arthroscopes are typically placed through a cannula that has both an inflow port and an outflow port, each of which is provided with a simple stopcock device for flow control. The arthroscopic camera provides a view of the surgical site through the cannula. The second incision provides access for the introduction and use of surgical instruments to the surgical site. [0004] A suction tank downstream of the stopcock is used to drain the irrigation fluid through the outflow port while the surgeon or his assistant evacuates the surgical site as needed. The stopcock is u...
