[0036] A series of studies were conducted to evaluate various label constructions applied to freshly molded HDPE bottles, and the extent of label defects that subsequently occurred.

[0037] Label construction A-K was prepared and applied to freshly molded bottles. The bottle is 6 inches high and 2.5 inches in diameter and is formed from DowHDPE DMDA 6400NT 7 with a melt index of 0.8. HDPE granules do not contain additional additives such as antioxidants, antistatic agents, slip agents and antiblocking agents. The bottles were flame treated prior to evaluation. Five minutes after the bottles had left the mold, the various label structures were applied to the bottles. The bottle temperature at the time of label application ranged from 83 to 98°F.

[0038] Defective label counts were performed 1 hour, 4 hours and 24 hours after label application to the bottles. Defects are in the form of visible air bubbles under the facestock, or any folds or wrinkles in the label facestock...

Abstract

Label constructions and labeled containers are described which exhibit reduced label defects. The label constructions can be applied relatively soon after manufacture of the container and thereby avoid a requirement of storing containers for pre-designated dwell times. Also described are related methods of eliminating or at least reducing the occurrence of label defects by use of the label constructions and techniques of selecting the label constructions.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 268,079, filed December 16, 2015, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. field of invention [0002] This topic relates to methods for reducing labeling defects when labeling plastic containers such as bottles. The subject matter also relates to labels for improved application to such containers. This topic also covers labeled containers. Background of the invention [0003] Plastic bottles or similar containers are commonly used to store liquids such as water, soft drinks, motor oil, milk, cooking oils, consumer healthcare products such as shampoos and soaps, and inks. They are also used to store solids such as cat litter, pet food, consumer food such as coffee and others. Compared to glass bottles, plastic bottles are favored by manufacturers, distributors and consumers due to their light weight and relatively low production costs. [0004] Plastic bottles a...
