Problems solved by technology

[0002] However, the use of standard amounts of IPA is undesirable not only because it is not cost effective, but also because of its limited functionality (no added benefit to fabric softening compositions other than those discussed above)

Embodiment 1

[0055] To initially determine the mixing compatibility of EsQ with various plasticizers, various blends of EsQ with the plasticizers shown in Table 1 below were prepared. These blends contained EsQ and plasticizer in a 90:10 (weight ratio).

[0056] Table 1

[0057]

[0058] Each of the eight (8) exemplary EsQ+plasticizer blends was prepared by heating the specified amount of EsQ (without solvent) to about 70°C to 85°C. Weigh approximately 90 grams of EsQ, place in a 125 mL HDPE bottle and stir. To this was added about 10 grams of each of the plasticizers shown in Table 1 and stirred until the ingredients were well mixed and a uniform consistency was achieved. The samples were then covered and placed in an oven at 55°C, where they were kept for one day. The results of the preliminary evaluation showed that only certain plasticizers showed good compatibility, namely blends A, B and G.

[0059] Based on this initial evaluation, blends A, B, G were flow tested to determine...

Embodiment 2

[0065] Seven exemplary FS compositions were prepared with combinations of EsQ, tallow, plasticizer, and IPA, as shown in Table 3 below.

[0066] table 3

[0067]

[0068]

[0069] Each of these exemplary FS compositions was prepared by first heating the EsQ (without solvent) to about 70°C to 85°C. The EsQ was then weighed according to the amounts in Table 2 above and added to an empty 125 mL HDPE bottle. Separately the tallow was heated to about 45°C, the tallow was weighed according to the amounts in Table 2 above, and added to the HDPE bottle.

[0070] Plasticizer was added to the blend of EsQ and tallow followed by IPA. Stir each resulting mixture until all ingredients are well combined and of a uniform consistency. The samples were capped, placed in an oven at 55°C and kept at that temperature for a period of one day prior to flow testing. Flow tests were performed using the same equipment and procedure as shown in Example 1 above. The results of the flow tests ...

Embodiment 3

[0080] Two additional exemplary FS compositions were prepared using a combination of EsQ, tallow, plasticizer containing IM EO alcohol, and IPA, as shown in Table 6 below.

[0081] Table 6

[0082]

[0083] Each of these exemplary FS compositions was prepared according to the parameters shown in Example 2 above, and then flow tested. The results are shown in Table 7 below. It can be seen that embodiment 9 (with DA6 plasticizer) exhibited the closest rheological behavior to Control 2 from Example 1 above.

Abstract

Described herein are fabric softening compositions comprising a quaternary ammonium compound, an edible-type tallow, isopropyl alcohol, and a plasticizer comprising an iso-methyl group. Methods of making and using the fabric softening compositions are also described herein.

Description

Background technique [0001] Conventional fabric softener compositions are added to the wash, rinse or dry steps of a laundry cycle, for example to soften clothes and reduce static. Such fabric softeners are usually formed from a blend of: a quaternary ammonium compound (such as a salt) or an imidazolinium compound having at least one long-chain hydrocarbyl group, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and to optimize the resulting combination Additives of the nature of the substance. It is known that quaternary ammonium compounds exhibit particularly good fabric softening properties and that IPA is commonly used to lower the melting temperature of quaternary ammonium compounds in order to improve the manufacture and handling of the resulting fabric softener compositions. IPA is also used as a vehicle for the formation of spontaneous emulsions during the manufacture of fabric softener compositions, further increasing manufacturing efficiency. [0002] However, the use of standard amounts o...
