Embodiment Construction

[0017] Embodiments described herein relate to power management for systems in transit. More specifically, embodiments described herein relate to methods and systems for power management using power converters in transportation.

[0018] Specifically, embodiments described herein may adjust power factor based on varying AC and DC load demands and varying AC and / or DC power entering the system.

[0019] Embodiments described herein can accommodate inductive or reactive loads and sources that create power efficiency losses in the power management system without additional power factor correction circuitry (eg, capacitor banks, etc.). For example, inductive loads (such as transformers, induction motors, etc.) may have hysteresis currents that require reactive current for magnetization. The reactive current required by lightly loaded machines can be very high. Because the current and voltage are out of phase, and because the current may not be sinusoidal, the additional current f...

Abstract

Methods and systems for power management using a power converter in transport are provided. In one embodiment, the method includes monitoring a varying AC input to the power converter. The method alsoincludes calculating a power factor adjustment based on the monitored varying AC input. Also, the method includes a power converter controller adjusting the power converter based on the calculated power factor adjustment to cause the power converter to supply a reactive current to a varying AC load.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments described herein relate to power management for systems in transit. More specifically, embodiments described herein relate to methods and systems for power management using power converters in transportation. Background technique [0002] A transport refrigeration system (TRS) is often used to control environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, humidity , air quality, etc.). In some embodiments, a TRS may include multiple devices that require varying AC or DC power to operate and a TRS power management system for powering these devices. Some of these devices can act as inductive loads operating with a lagging power factor. This can cause the TRS power management system's current to be out of phase with the voltage, which can result in higher than normal current draw and inefficient electrical power transfer. Contents of the invention [0003] Embodiments described herein relate to power management for systems in transit. More specifi...
