Abstract

A microlens array diffuser operable to produce substantially diffuse illumination includes an array of microlenses, wherein each microlens has a respective periodic influence characteristic and a respective surface profile. The microlens array comprises at least two microlenses having respective periodicity influencing properties different from each other and respective surface profiles different from each other. Each surface profile is configured to produce substantially equal illuminated fields. A microlens array diffuser may be integrated as part of an illuminator operable to produce substantially diffuse illumination.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to microlens array diffusers. Background technique [0002] Optoelectronic modules, such as optical ranging systems and proximity sensors, are often arranged to operate using diffuse lighting. Such an optoelectronic module may include an illuminator module operable to generate diffuse illumination in a scene over a particular field of illumination (FOI) and a photosensitive assembly operable to collect light over a particular field of view (FOV). In normal operation, most of the light source collected by the light sensor is diffuse illumination reflected from objects in the scene. In some cases, a portion of the collected light can be attributed to background light. An illuminator may include a diffuser (eg, an optical element or series of optical elements) and a light generating component (eg, an LED, VCSEL, or array of LEDs or VCSELs), operable together to produce diffuse illumination. [0003] The illuminators can be...
