Abstract

The invention relates to a device for generating a beam of charged particles with adjustable orbital angular momentum. The apparatus first includes one or more components for providing a beam of charged particles. The device is further characterized by an electrical arrangement for imparting adjustable orbital angular momentum to the charged particle beam during operation. By adjusting the amount of current, the orbital angular momentum of the generated vortex beam of charged particles is tunable. By reversing the direction of the current, the chirality of the generated vortex beams of charged particles is switchable. The generation of charged particle vortex beams by the invention is independent of the energy of the charged particle beam. The generation of charged particle vortex beams by the present invention is predictable and reproducible.
