But because the high-friction rollers are at the same height as the other low-friction rollers, a package that lands on a low-friction roller changes its preferred diversion trajectory before the entire package passes through the chute

Embodiment Construction

[0009] figure 1 and 2 A sorting conveyor system embodying features of the invention is shown in . The system includes a sorting conveyor or sorter 10 , which conveys items such as mailers, parcels and envelopes in a conveying direction 12 . The diverter chutes 14, 14' adjoin one side of the sorter 10 and slope downwards from an upper end 16 to a lower end 17, which define the length of the chute. In this example, the splitter chutes 14 , 14 ′ and other such upstream and downstream chutes are continuous and separated by walls 18 . Each wall 18 separates an upstream side 20 of the chute 14 from a downstream side 22 of an adjacent chute. The distance between successive walls 18 defines the width W of the chute 14 . The chute does not need to be continuous as shown in this example. In this version, the upper ends of the walls 18 are set back downwards from the upper ends 16 of the runners 14, 14'. The imaginary continuation 18' of the wall 18 to the upper end 16 serves to ar...

Abstract

A divert chute and a sorting conveyor system having divert chutes that include an array of high-friction rollers in a landing zone to resist the cross-chute momentum of parcels diverted off the sorting conveyor at high speeds. The rollers, which protrude above a flat slide region of the chute, rotate only in a direction down the chute. Parcels sliding axially along the high-friction rollers acrossthe chute are slowed or stopped in the cross-chute direction while being redirected down the chute.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to motorized conveyors, and more particularly to conveyors that sort packages from the side onto chutes. Background technique [0002] In various industries, such as in packaging and parcel handling, sorting conveyors are used to sort parcels on one or both sides onto discharge chutes. Gravity roller conveyors or flat skids that slope down from the sides of the sorting conveyor are examples of two types of discharge chutes. Packages diverted at high speed from sorting conveyors may fall from the sky. In a typical gravity roller conveyor, each parallel roller extends across the entire width of the chute. Airborne packages landing on metal rollers can slide axially along the rollers and flip up onto the rails on one side of the chute. Similar results may occur with flat chutes. Therefore, the two chutes must be made wide enough to provide a long enough dwell distance for airborne packages. [0003] Another type of di...
