Problems solved by technology

As another example, if the exhaust valves do not open as expected, the combustion gases do not leave the corresponding cylinders, resulting in a high-pressure blowdown event into the intake port, which may be due to noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) and / or engine deterioration causing customer concern

Embodiment Construction

[0025] The following description refers to the control engine (for example, figure 1 A system and method for a cylinder valve deactivation mechanism of an engine system. The cylinder valve deactivation mechanism may include an electric latch rocker mechanism, such as in Figure 2A to Figure 2D The electric latch rocker mechanism depicted in . For example, by actuating a latch pin of the valve deactivation mechanism between an engaged position and a disengaged position by energizing an associated solenoid, the corresponding cylinder valve can be moved between an active state and a deactivated state. switch, as in image 3 summarized in the table. For example, according to Figure 4 method and about Figure 11 To illustrate, it is possible to change the latch pin position and thus the valve state during engine startup or shutdown, and for example according to Figure 5 A method whereby the latch pin position and thus the valve state may be changed during transitions to and...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method and a system for variable displacement engine diagnostics. Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing a cylinder valve deactivation mechanism in an enginesystem having cam-actuated valves. Movement of a latch pin of the deactivation mechanism is inferred from an induction current generated by a solenoid coupled to the latch pin, and the inferred movement is used to diagnose operation of cylinder valve deactivation mechanism. The inferred movement and a profile of the induction current is also used to estimate camshaft and crankshaft timing for improved cylinder fuel delivery in the absence of a camshaft sensor.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates to methods and systems for monitoring the actuation of a cylinder valve deactivation mechanism in a variable displacement engine (VDE). Background technique [0002] Engines operating with a variable number of active or deactivated cylinders, also known as variable displacement engines (or VDEs), can be used to increase fuel economy while optionally changing the overall exhaust mixture air-fuel ratio to Maintain around stoichiometry. In some examples, half of the engine's cylinders may be deactivated during selected conditions, which may be defined by parameters such as speed / load windows, vehicle speed, and the like. In other examples, cylinders may be individually and selectively deactivated. [0003] The VDE control system may deactivate selected cylinders by controlling multiple cylinder valve deactivators that affect the operation of the cylinder's intake and exhaust valves. Various mechanisms may be used to chan...
