Abstract

An arrayed waveguide grating is disclosed. The arrayed waveguide grating (145) includes two star couplers (130, 150) and an array of waveguides (215, 225) connecting the star couplers. The array of waveguides of the arrayed waveguide grating may have a T-shaped geometry making possible an arrayed waveguide grating with an arbitrarily large free spectral range in a compact form factor. Different materials may be used in the optical paths to reduce the temperature dependence of the characteristics of the arrayed waveguide grating.

Description

technical field [0001] One or more aspects of embodiments according to the present invention relate to arrayed waveguide gratings, and more particularly, to improved arrayed waveguide grating designs. Background technique [0002] Arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) are used in a variety of applications to route light according to its wavelength. Rectangular AWGs may have various advantageous properties including compactness, but the number and channel spacing achievable with such devices may be constrained by the lateral spacing between the waveguides of the array. [0003] Therefore, there is a need for an improved arrayed waveguide grating design. Contents of the invention [0004] Aspects of embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to arrayed waveguide gratings. An arrayed waveguide grating includes two star couplers and an array of waveguides connecting the star couplers. The T-shaped geometry of the array of waveguides makes it possible to realize an AWG w...
