Problems solved by technology

However, the velocity / flow of exhaust gas supplied to the catalytic converter by conventional wastegate assemblies is too low, which results in insufficient heating of the catalytic converter by the exhaust gas, especially during cold starts of the internal combustion engine

Embodiment Construction

[0027] Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, figure 1 A system 30 of the vehicle is shown schematically. System 30 includes an internal combustion engine 32 which, during operation, produces exhaust. The internal combustion engine 32 is in rotational communication with the vehicle transmission. The transmission may be any type of transmission including hybrid, manual, automatic or semi-automatic transmissions known to those of ordinary skill in the art. The internal combustion engine 32 produces rotational torque that is selectively transferred to the transmission via shafts that in turn transfer the rotational torque to one or more wheels. It should also be appreciated that the internal combustion engine 32 and / or the transmission may be configured in any suitable manner sufficient to generate and transfer rotational torque for propelling the vehicle without departing from the scope of the present inven...

Abstract

A turbocharger includes a turbine housing including an interior surface defining a turbine housing interior. The interior surface extends between a turbine housing inlet and a turbine housing outlet. The turbine housing also includes a wastegate duct disposed downstream of the turbine housing inlet and defining a wastegate channel. The turbocharger also includes a valve seat disposed about the wastegate channel, with the valve seat having a valve seat plane extending along the valve seat. The turbocharger further includes a wastegate assembly including a valve element engageable with the valveseat. The wastegate channel extends along a channel axis, and the channel axis is obliquely oriented with respect to the valve seat plane such that the wastegate channel and the valve element are configured to direct exhaust gas to a catalytic converter.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a wastegate assembly for a turbocharger. Background technique [0002] A turbocharger receives exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and delivers compressed air to the internal combustion engine. Turbochargers are used to increase the power output of internal combustion engines, reduce the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines and reduce the emissions produced by internal combustion engines. Delivery of compressed air to an internal combustion engine through a turbocharger allows the internal combustion engine to be smaller, but capable of producing the same or similar horsepower as a larger naturally aspirated internal combustion engine. A smaller internal combustion engine for a vehicle reduces the vehicle's mass and aerodynamic frontal area, which helps reduce the fuel consumption of the internal combustion engine and improves the vehicle's fuel economy. [0003] A conventional turbocha...
