Problems solved by technology

[0006] Depending on the configuration of the prosthetic components, impact tool and surgical robot, ensuring proper implantation of the prosthetic cup can be complicated by lack of visibility and limited access to the surgical site
Additionally, maintaining a set trajectory can be difficult for certain methods and surgical techniques, often resulting in incorrect alignment of the prosthetic cup or other prosthetic components due to incorrect alignment and / or application of impact force. alignment

Embodiment Construction

[0082] Reference now figure 1 , A surgical system 30 including a surgical robot 32 is shown. The surgical robot 32 generally includes a base 34, a robot arm 36, and a coupling 38. The robotic arm 36 is supported by the base 34 and is configured to move, drive, maintain, or otherwise control the position and / or orientation of the link 38 relative to the base 34 during use. The coupling 38 is adapted to releasably secure the end effector 40, which supports or otherwise includes a tool (generally designated 42). The tool 42 (eg, impactor) is configured to support, position, or otherwise facilitate driving a workpiece 44 (eg, an acetabular cup) used in connection with various surgical procedures, as described in more detail below. In some embodiments, the surgical system 30 is configured to guide the workpiece 44 relative to a target generally designated 46, for example along or relative to a trajectory T maintained by the surgical robot 32. In the representative embodiment shown...

Abstract

Provided is an end effector for impacting a prosthesis at a surgical site along a trajectory maintained by a surgical robot. The end effector comprises an impactor assembly and a guide. The impactor assembly has a head to receive impact force, an interface to releasably attach to the prosthesis, a shaft extending along an impactor axis between the head and the interface, and an impactor engagementsurface disposed between the head and the interface. The guide is adapted to attach to the surgical robot and comprises a channel extending along a guide axis and defining an opening arranged to receive a portion of the shaft of the impactor assembly, a guide engagement surface shaped to abut the impactor engagement surface, and a limiter to maintain abutment of the impactor engagement surface with the guide engagement surface to facilitate coaxial alignment of the axes with the trajectory maintained by the surgical robot.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related applications [0002] This patent application claims the priority and all rights of the United States Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 622,303 filed on January 26, 2018, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Surgical robots are often used to help medical professionals perform various routine surgical operations. To this end, surgeons can use surgical robots to guide, position, move, actuate, or otherwise manipulate various tools, components, prostheses, etc. during surgery. [0004] It should be understood that surgical robots can be used to assist surgeons in performing many different types of surgical operations, and are generally used in operations involving the correction, resection or replacement of degenerative joints to help improve the patient's mobility and relieve pain. For example, in hip replacement surgery, the surgeon replaces certain parts of the patient's hip ...
