Abstract

An internal combustion engine system includes an engine with a plurality of pistons housed in respective ones of a plurality of cylinders, an air intake system to provide air to the plurality of cylinders through respective ones of a plurality of intake valves, an exhaust system to release exhaust gas from the plurality of cylinders through respective one of a plurality of exhaust valves. A valvetrain is provided for cylinder deactivation of a first part of the plurality of cylinders and compression release braking on a second part of the plurality of cylinders.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to the operation of internal combustion engine systems, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to cylinder deactivation and compression release of internal combustion engines. [0002] Cylinder deactivation at low engine loads may be accomplished by closing the intake and exhaust valves of a portion of the engine's cylinders during certain operating conditions to save fuel and improve efficiency. Cylinder deactivation typically requires switching the cam profile operating on the deactivated cylinder from a nominal profile to a zero profile. [0003] Engine braking can be achieved through variable geometry (VG) turbo intake and / or through electric mode. However, some engines, such as those with low compression ratios and / or low exhaust backpressure, do not provide sufficient deceleration capability under electric mode conditions. Also, a VG turbo is more expensive than a turbo with a wastegate. Accordingly, furth...
