An operation control device for a reciprocating compressor operates in accordance with a change in load, the operation control device comprising: a detection unit that measures torque, rotational speed, counter electromotive force, and current applied to a motor of the reciprocating compressor; a control unit for deriving a mode conversion time point using the detected torque, rotational speed, counter electromotive force, and current of the motor, and outputting a control signal for changing the turn ratio of the motor; and a drive unit that changes the number-of-turns ratio of the motor on the basis of the control signal, thereby switching between at least two operation modes and operating the reciprocating compressor.
