[0016] overview

[0017] As referred to herein, a multi-modal route between a certain departure location (or "source") and a certain destination includes at least two road segments that a user can traverse using different modes of transportation . Some modes of transportation are public. Examples of public transportation include subways, buses, trains, trams or trolleys, ferries, and the like. Other modes of transportation (such as cars or bicycles) are private. Some of the ride-sharing offerings offered today may operate similarly to providers of traditional taxis and services where individuals or small groups request rides together, as well as ride-sharing services (i.e. rides shared between strangers to reduce costs). In either case, transportation provided by a ride-sharing service is referred to herein as a private mode of transportation.

Abstract

An indication of a first starting location and a first destination is received from a first user device operated by a first user, and an indication of a second starting location and a second destination is received from a second user device operated by a second user. A multi-modal route from the first starting location to the first destination is generated in view of the second user travelling from the second starting location to the second destination. Generating the multi-modal route includes generating (i) a ride share segment of the multimodal route which the first user and the second usercan traverse together using a ride share service and (ii) a segment of the route associated with a mode of transport other than the ride share service. An indication of the multi-modal route from thefirst starting location to the first destination is provided to the first user device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to geographic applications, and in particular, to providing turn-by-turn navigation directions using public and private modes of transportation. Background technique [0002] Today, digital maps and user information of geographic areas can be provided on many electronic devices such as personal computers, tablet computers, mobile phones, navigators provided as dedicated devices or embedded in the head unit of vehicles, etc. Step-by-step instructions for navigating through geographic areas. Digital maps and / or navigation directions are provided through dedicated software applications, such as a map application program or "app," as well as through general-purpose software applications, such as a web browser. [0003] Software applications typically provide navigation directions for a particular mode of transportation, such as driving, walking, or taking a bus. The user typically specifies the mode of transportation and th...
