Embodiment Construction

[0062] Before describing in detail one particular embodiment, a general overview of methods and apparatus utilizing the concepts is provided.

[0063] It is recognized throughout the imaging system that expanding the aperture has the potential to improve imaging performance [1]. When using ultrasound as an analytical tool, especially in clinical settings, pore size can be limited by the complexity and expense associated with extended-aperture systems. Furthermore, ultrasonic transducers having large physical dimensions to allow large apertures have limited adaptability to different applications.

[0064] Taking the clinical application of ultrasound imaging as an example, a typical clinical ultrasound probe is controlled and moved by a physician to fit the contours and shape of the human body. Physical ultrasound transducer size becomes a compromise between cost, ergonomics and image performance. It may be useful to provide a method for improving the quality of ultrasound im...

Abstract

Aspects and embodiments described provide an ultrasound method and an ultrasound apparatus and computer program product operable to perform that method. The ultrasound method comprises: configuring two or more separate ultrasound transmitters to transmit a signal into a coincident region; configuring a receiving array to receive wavefronts representative of a transmitted signal from each of the two or more transmitters after interaction of the transmitted signal with a medium located within the coincident region; analysing each of the received wavefronts to determine a relative spatial position of each of the two or more separate ultrasound transmitters; and using the determined relative spatial position of each of the two or more separate ultrasound transmitters to perform coherent signalcombination of the wavefronts received at the receiving array from each of the two or more transmitters after interaction of the transmitted signal with the medium located within the coincident region. Accordingly, in some embodiments, the method allows for provision of a multi- transducer ultrasound imaging system by providing a robust method to accurately localize the transducers in the systemin order to beamform a final image. The method and apparatus described allow for improvements in imaging quality in terms of resolution, depth penetration, contrast and signal to noise ratio (SNR).

Description

technical field [0001] The described aspects and embodiments provide an ultrasound method and an ultrasound apparatus, and a computer program product operable to perform the method. Background technique [0002] Ultrasound is a widely used analytical tool. Advantages of ultrasound include safety and low cost compared to other possible analytical tools. Conventional ultrasound systems, however, can generate information that may be difficult to assess, for example, due to the limited resolution and viewpoint-dependent artifacts inherent in commonly used ultrasound transducers. Ultrasound imaging using usual ultrasound transducers can be particularly challenging, for example, if imaging at great depths is sought. Contents of the invention [0003] A first aspect provides an ultrasonic method, the method comprising: configuring two or more separate ultrasonic transmitters to transmit signals to coincident regions; receiving a wavefront representing a transmitted signal from...
