The invention discloses a method capable of improving the opening time of a phenolic resin adhesive, which comprises the following steps: diluting and dissolving polyhydric alcohol by using deionized water, and uniformly stirring the materials; adding cellulose ether into the mixture obtained by the step 1, slowly performing heating to 50-60 DEG C, and performing stirring until the cellulose ether is completely dissolved; performing cooling to normal temperature, adding xanthan gum for dissolving, and finally adjusting the solid content of the solution to 45%; and adding the prepared solution into the adhesive to finally obtain the adhesive with relatively long opening time. The method disclosed by the invention is simple to operate and obvious in effect. The polyhydric alcohol is added into the adhesive, so that the uniformity of the cellulose ether in a solution can be improved, and the water-retaining property of the adhesive can be improved to a certain extent by both the cellulose ether and the xanthan gum.
