[0031] Tailor welded blanks, such as metal blanks, formed from a plurality of sheets have many applications, particularly in the automotive industry and generally in various manufacturing industries. However, certain techniques for joining multiple sheets may leave unwelded portions at the edges of the welded joint. It should be understood that the systems and methods may leave a portion of insufficiently bonded material when bonded by certain processes. For example, the weld area is different compared to the rest of the seam using plunge-retract welding. According to various techniques described herein, end welding techniques and systems are used to complete the welding of a length of joint. In certain other embodiments, the refill spot welding process may be applied at multiple locations along the length of the joint to bring the sheets together.

Abstract

The present application relates to a technique for creating a weld (104) along a joint (106). A method begins by positioning a first edge of a first member (100) proximate to a second edge of a second member (102) to form the joint (106), wherein the joint (106) is to be welded along the length from a first position (110) on the joint (106) to a second position (112) on the joint (106). A clamping ring of a refill spot welding apparatus ( 118) is placed to surround an unwelded portion of the length. The clamping ring contacts a top surface of the first member (100) and a top surface of the second member (102). A first refill spot weld process is performed with the refill spot welding apparatus (118) to join the first member (100) and the second member (102) at a first spot weld on the joint (106).
