Embodiment Construction

[0037] Various embodiments will now be described with reference to the drawings. The examples are intended to illustrate various features of the present disclosure, and are not intended to limit the scope of the present disclosure. It should be understood that changes may be made to these examples which remain within the scope of the appended claims.

[0038] figure 1 A combination or hybrid ( 1 ) of two analytical systems ( 100 , 300 ) is schematically shown. The analysis system (100) receives and prepares a sample (2) to be analyzed by the analysis system (300). The analysis system (300), referred to herein as the first analysis system, is an analysis system that requires isolation from vibrations, at least during analysis. The first analysis system (300) is normally kept under vacuum in use. The first analysis system (300) may be, for example, an electron microscopy (EM) system or any other high resolution imaging system. The first analysis system (300) is normally kep...

Abstract

A coupling for connecting together vacuum-based analysis systems requiring vibration isolation, comprising: a tubular connector having a longitudinal axis, the connector includes a first end for connection to a first analysis system and a flexible portion that reduces vibration transmission and allows displacement of the first analysis system in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the connector; and a seal longitudinally separated from the flexible portion for vacuum sealing between the connector and a second analysis system; wherein the connector contains ion optics for transferring ions between the first analysis system and the second analysis system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a coupling for connecting systems, such as vacuum-based analysis systems, where one system requires vibration isolation from another system. Specifically, but not exclusively, the present disclosure relates to a coupling for connecting a vacuum-based analytical system, such as a mass spectrometer, to a vibration-sensitive analytical system that can also operate in a vacuum operations such as electron microscopy. Background technique [0002] There is increasing interest in native-state mass spectrometry (MS) and electron microscopy (EM) of complex molecules such as biopolymers or macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, proteins or peptides and their complexes things. Advances in ion soft landing allow direct deposition of intact proteins, proteins, and protein-DNA complexes onto substrates for analysis under ultrahigh vacuum and optionally cryogenic conditions. A system combining mass spectrometer mass selection with soft ...
