Abstract

A system and method provide an artificial intelligence (AI) partner for each functional block in a programmable logic controller (PLC) program to integrate the AI into an automation system. A plurality of function blocks and system function blocks are grouped into logical groups. The control problem is decomposed from the top layer into logical partitions as a plurality of functions programmed as functional blocks in a PLC program. Each functional block and the entire PLC program are integrated with an associated AI partner. The runtime system of the AI partner provides new runtime capabilities. A method of implementing an AI partner is provided. A method of controlling an automated process is also provided.
