Non-contact fault monitoring equipment arranged on different towers at intervals is used for collecting and storing waveforms of power frequency current, power frequency voltage and traveling wave current; a contact type fault monitoring device arranged on a power transmission line wire is used for collecting power frequency current, power frequency voltage and traveling wave current, whether the power transmission line breaks down or not is determined according to the collected power frequency current and power frequency voltage, and when it is determined that the power transmission line breaks down, power frequency current and power frequency voltage fault waveforms used for detection are sent. The traveling wave current waveform is used for fault location; when a fault waveform sent by the contact type fault monitoring equipment is received, determining a fault occurrence moment according to the fault waveform, and recalling waveforms stored in a preset time interval before and after the fault occurrence moment of all non-contact type fault monitoring equipment; and determining a fault position according to the fault waveform, the traveling wave current waveform and the storage waveform, thereby realizing accurate judgment of the position of a fault point in the power transmission line.
