[0035] in all Figures 1 to 7 Throughout, the same reference numerals are used to denote like components and features. However, in Figure 8, directly with Figures 1 to 7 Comparable parts and features are given in the Figures 1 to 7 Add 200 reference signs to those used in .

[0036] existfigure 1 In the shown conventional X-ray source, the cathode filament 30 is connected to the isolated power supply 10 . Surrounding the cathode filament 30 and connected to the high voltage power supply 20 is a focusing cup 40 . In operation, electron beam 50 is accelerated by annular anode 60 and focused on metal target 70 which emits X-rays 80 . The power supply 10 typically includes an isolated step-down transformer (shown as 11 in FIG. 2 ) providing a voltage of approximately 6V to heat the cathode filament 30 .

Abstract

The present invention discloses a compact X-ray source, improving controllability an insulation from unwanted high voltage effects. In one aspect, an active variable conductance device (130, 330) connected in series with the cathode is used in a closed loop, feedback arrangement to control the cathode beam current; the current flowing through the device to the cathode being directly sensed and compared with a desired current level. The result of the comparison is used to control the conductance of the device, thereby directly influencing the cathode current. A second aspect provides an extension of a Faraday cage, whereby the secondary winding of a transformer used to supply power to components within the cage is shielded within a coaxial, tubular member connected to the cage and extending outwardly from it.

Description

Technical field: [0001] The present invention relates generally to the generation of X-rays and in particular but not exclusively to a compact X-ray source. Background technique: [0002] A typical X-ray source consists of a thermionic source (typically an indirectly heated filament), a high voltage power supply that accelerates electrons to high energies, and a target made of a high atomic number metal. [0003] figure 1 A simple schematic depicting a very basic and traditional X-ray source, although in reality the X-ray source is usually implemented with more complex structures, including the use of additional electrodes and magnetic fields to steer and focus the electron beam. [0004] Under the action of the isolated heating source 10 , electrons are emitted as thermions from the hot cathode filament 30 and are attracted to the metal target 70 via an intervening anode 60 . Due to the high potential difference established between the filament and the anode / target by mea...
