Embodiment Construction

[0033] The present invention refers to the fact that with some antenna array structures, the components for estimating the weight vectors for one multipath finger are approximate with respect to simple phase shifts (neglecting the influence of noise and errors in the weight vector estimates). This can be seen from the model described below.

[0034] Figure 1 shows graphically the angular relationship of two example multipath fingers A and B to the antenna normal vector C of one sensor of an antenna array. Multipath fingers A and B are a well-known result of various physical obstacles (buildings, hills, etc.) that redirect radio signals generated by radio sources such as digital cellular telephones. The angle between the multipath finger A and the antenna normal vector C is denoted as θ in Fig. 1 A and the angle between the multipath finger B and the antenna normal vector C is denoted as θ B .

[0035] Each multipath finger can be assumed to have some spread out angle around...

Abstract

The angle ( theta A, theta B) at which a multipath finger (A, B) produced by a digital radio communication source arrives at an antenna array can be estimated using an uplink weight vector (w) associated with the multipath finger (A, B). Due to a characteristic of uplink weight vectors (w) used in antenna arrays having a shift invariance structure, the estimate of the angle ( theta A, theta B) can be calculated based on the uplink weight vector (w).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the use of adaptive antenna arrays in digital radio communications, and more particularly to downlink angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimation for use in such adaptive antenna arrays. Background technique [0002] In array signal processing for digital communications, arrays of receive and transmit antennas are deployed in base stations (eg, cellular telephone networks) to overcome interference and in this way increase capacity and improve system performance. In order to exploit potential performance gains from antenna arrays, there are two main concepts. [0003] One approach is to use antennas to form multiple fixed beams in the uplink. The receiver algorithm then uses the output from one or more beams to receive a desired user. Then in the downlink, the data is sent in the beam with the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or in case of diversity system transmission in several beams. [0004] Another possibilit...
