Embodiment Construction

[0036] The present invention provides a simple, fast and convenient automated device for constructing tissue arrays. The present invention's improvement over the traditional process is due in the first aspect to the adoption of a separate z-axis for each punch, and the dual intelligent mechanism of the traditional process is no longer needed, and a method has been developed to make two different The punch is a simple and precise device for positioning in any tissue array instrument to form a tissue array. In a second embodiment of the invention, automation is simplified by completely separating the two punches (donor and recipient), giving them their own probes (unlike Kononen et al.) and using separate or dual z-drives without resorting to bulky turret or slide arrangements (as disclosed in Leighton, US Patent No. 6,103,518, "Apparatus for Creating Tissue Arrays"). Modifications to the conventional process also include the use of replaceable punches that can be automatically...

Abstract

Arrays of biological tissue can be created by removing cores from regions of interest in a series of donor blocks (16) of embedded tissues. The cores removed are placed in a regular array in a recipient block (15). This is typically done with two different punches, one for obtaining the cores of interest and the other for creating the receiving holes in the recipient block (15). The present invention comprises such a system including two separate z axes, one for each punch. Each punch has its own stylet and the axis of each punch is parallel to the axis of its drive. Alternatively, the invention is made by providing a single z axis, with a mechanism for automatically changing two or more punches in and out of a holder on the z axis.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an invention patent application with an application date of March 19, 2002, an application number of 02806824.6, and an invention title of "tissue array instrument". technical field [0002] Biological tissue arrays can be made by removing cores from regions of interest in a series of tissue-embedded donor masses. The removed cores are placed in regular arrays in the acceptor block. This is typically done with two different punches, one used to obtain the core of interest and the other to create the receiving hole in the receptor block. The present invention relates to a simplified and economical system and apparatus for the automated manufacture of tissue arrays. Background technique [0003] Biological tissue arrays include regular arrays of embedded biological tissue arranged into sliceable pieces, typically made of the same embedding material originally used for the tissue in the core. The new block can be sectione...
