Embodiment 1

[0037] A patient with psoriasis vulgaris, with chronic inflammation in both arms, was treated with microparticle bioactive glass designated "45S5", having the above preferred composition, the glass particle size was less than 20 microns, mixed with aloe vera as base gel. The ratio of bioactive glass to gel was 30 to 60 by weight. This rash is chronic and will not heal until treated with the therapy of the present invention. Apply the mixture of the invention every 24 hours. After two treatments, itching, swelling and pain disappeared.

Embodiment 2

[0039] A patient suffering from psoriasis vulgaris on the palms for several years was treated with the same bioactive glass composition as in Example 1. The rash was chronic and unresponsive to all other medical treatments prior to treatment with the therapy of the present invention. The composition is applied every 24 hours. After two treatments, the itching, swelling and pain were gone and the redness was reduced.

Embodiment 3

[0041] A patient with a mild chronic (18 month) rash of unknown etiology on the top of the arm was treated with the microparticulate bioactive glass composition described in Example 1. In the past, only topical steroids have been used for 18 months with only modest short-term effects. Apply this mixture 3 times every 24 hours. After three treatments, the rash disappeared and did not recur.

Abstract

This invention relates to a method for treating inflammatory symptoms such as burning, redness, itching, swelling and pain which accompany skin disorders other than wounds of the skin. The method comprising topical application of a topical medicinal composition comprising a non-interlinked, particulate bioactive glass mixed with a topical medicinal carrier to the site of the skin disorder.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a skin topical therapy and a composition useful for alleviating inflammatory conditions such as burning, redness, itching, swelling and pain associated with acute or chronic skin diseases. Background of the invention [0002] Various skin diseases, such as psoriasis, acne, poison ivy and prickly heat to name a few, are accompanied by epithelial inflammation. These inflammations often cause burning, redness, itching, swelling, and pain in the affected area. Although the root causes of various skin diseases are different, the general inflammatory response is regulated by leukocyte activity and inflammatory cytokines as hosts for interleukins and tumor necrosis factor. In contrast to apoptosis, necrosis releases cellular debris into the extracellular environment and in this way activates neutrophils and macrophages—key cells that initiate inflammatory responses. These activated cells themselves release hosts of cytoki...
