Embodiment Construction

[0042]By way of example and not limitation, many music companies have thousands of slow-moving recordings of old songs, such as "expired catalogs." Studios may have hundreds of titles, and their sales model is similar to that of publishers of other titles. Bringing these slow sellers to market is often an expensive task, even when there are consumers willing to buy such works when they are available. Referring now to FIG. 1 , a schematic diagram of an exemplary system layout, in a preferred embodiment, a music box 50 includes a persistent memory 52 and a data communication interface 54 . The music boxes are generally referenced herein as "50" and may include music boxes 50a and 50b. The music box 50 may be a professional device such as a stand-alone music box 50a, or may include a data store 52 and necessary software (not shown) installed on one or more personal computers such as computer 21 or computer 22 . In a preferred embodiment, to accommodate digital rights managemen...

Abstract

A system for peer-to-peer access to a collection of data is disclosed, comprising a music box (50) operatively connected to a persistent data store (52), the persistent data store (52) containing a plurality of data files of a predetermined data format, the data files further secured from unauthorized access; a controller (56); a data communication interface (14,54), operatively connected to the controller (56); and software (60) executing in the controller (56), the software (60) capable of identifying other systems (50) executing the software (60), allowing peer-to-peer sharing of the data files with the identified other systems (50) where the sharing is restricted to the identified other systems (50), and allowing users of the software (60) to manipulate the data files. In an exemplary embodiment, a plurality of data files are preloaded onto the persistent data store (52) from a larger set of data files; system (50) access to a peer-to-peer network of other like systems (50) is initialized and other systems (50) available on the peer-to-peer network identified; data files and their locations identified to systems (50); and a user with appropriate access rights is allowed to catalog the data files available on the identified systems (50) and optionally select a data file from the plurality of data files identified on the peer-to-peer network such as for sampling or downloading.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of data file access. More specifically, the present invention, in one exemplary embodiment, relates to a system and method for the operation of peer-to-peer access to data files containing data that may have usage fees. More specifically, the present invention relates in one exemplary embodiment to a system and method for peer-to-peer access to data files to provide paid access to preloaded and dynamically loaded content operations from a catalog. Background technique [0002] During these years, many artists and musicians have recorded a large number of works. Many labels have thousands of recordings that may not sell in large numbers. Furthermore, shelf space in a retail environment may not allow for placement of these recordings for sale, since slow selling recordings take up valuable shelf space. As used herein, "fixation" and "content" are understood to be equivalent to and include copyrighted works, i...
