Embodiment Construction

[0013] figure 1 A typical simplified side view of a high speed network inkjet printer 100 is shown. Printer 100 includes at least two printer spools or cylinders 102 and 104 , at least one of which is driven by a suitable motor or drive mechanism 106 . Alternative embodiments may include driving both pulley 102 and pulley 104 . Drive mechanism 106 , which may be considered a mechanism for transporting print media, drives at least one spool or roller such that print media 112 , such as paper, transparencies, or other print media, is positioned precisely beneath print carriages 108 and 110 . In a preferred embodiment, these carriages provide mechanical support and orientation as well as electrical connections for the inkjet device, which may be an ink containing ink cartridge with an integral printhead or a printhead with a separate ink cartridge.

[0014] Rotation of at least one of the spools or cylinders 102 and 104 moves the print medium 112 relative to the print carriage ...

Abstract

Throughput of ink jet printers can be increased by using multiple print heads (108, 110), each of which independently prints an image or text (114, 116, 118, 120) on a continuous roll of print media (112). Independently controlled printer carriages supporting the print heads simultaneously print images onto media since the printer carriages are separated by a distance that is substantially equal to at least one dimension of the image to be printed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to printing devices. More particularly, it relates to novel designs of high-speed network inkjet printing methods and apparatus for simultaneously printing images on a roll of print media using multiple print heads. technical background [0002] Thermal inkjet printers are well known and have recently become popular among users who purchase and use personal computers at home. Recently, improvements in thermal inkjet printing technology and the paper media used by printers have greatly enhanced image quality, so this technology is now used to print photo-quality images. It can be expected that this technology will be used for commercial printing. [0003] As with piezo printers, one disadvantage of thermal inkjet printers is the speed at which the machine can produce images. Now, a single image or a group of print heads on the carriage assembly repeatedly passes or sweeps across the media to print a single image on the m...
