Abstract

A lactone swelling composition and methods of using the composition. A resin material to be etched to form a porous textured surface on the resin material is conditioned with the lactone swelling composition. The porous textured surface allows metal to be deposited on the resin material, thereby forming a highly uniform bond between the textured resin material and the deposited metal. This bond between the metal and the resin material prevents delamination of the metal-resin bond. The lactone swellable composition also removes resinous material from the substrate. The lactone swelling composition may be used to treat resinous materials used in the manufacture of printed wiring boards. Metal can be deposited onto the textured resin material by electroless plating.
