An optical communications system comprising one or more light sources each for producing light in a different part of the spectrum; a plurality of optical modulators each for modulating with an input signal the light produced by the one or more light sources; and an optical switch connected between the one or more light sources and the plurality of optical modulators for switching the light output from the or each of the light sources to a different selected one of the plurality of optical modulators.
