Embodiment Construction

[0016] The use of medicinal plants such as echinacea is often based on or derived from the use of the original discoverers of these plants. The original discoverers of echinacea chose to use specific plants empirically. For example, early coneflower users could use visual cues of plant readiness to know when to harvest plants to achieve desired results. More recently, more precise methods have been developed. The method consists of performing a chemical analysis for the presence and amount of one or more marker compounds.

[0017] Cichoric acid is a preferred marker compound for preparations of Echinacea purpura due to the value of this marker for its use in cultivar identification.

[0018] However, there is no definitive relationship between any single specific marker and the observed immunomodulatory activity. Neither empirical nor chemical methods can reveal the optimal harvest period to obtain the most favorable immunostimulatory activity at the cellular level. Echina...

Abstract

Echinacea preparations having standardized chicoric acid levels and inducing an augmented level of immune-stimulatory activity. Augmentation of the immune stimulatory activity is achieved by the selection of a harvest time for Echinacea plants that is during a plant maturation stage that is prior to full bloom. Methods for augmenting the immune-stimulatory effects of Echinacea extracts by harvesting Echinacea plants prior to full bloom.

Description

technical background [0001] Extracts from plants of the genus Echinacea are commonly used in modulating immune responses in mammals. Echinacea plants are perennials that produce yellow daisies and are capable of harvesting for many years after they are first planted. Echinacea plants take two years to grow. Each newly planted plant goes through several stages of maturity before being harvested. In stages one through seven, echinacea plants go through the vegetative stages from germination to flowering and then to full flowering. Echinacea crops are usually harvested in full bloom and processed to extract products with medicinal properties. [0002] The specific echinacea compounds that modulate the immune response in mammals are not known. However, Echinacea plants contain a large number of active phytochemicals, such as caffeic acid derivatives (eg, cichoric acid), alkylamines (eg, butylamine docosatetraenoate), and glycoproteins / polysaccharides. Ingest all the phytochem...
