Embodiment Construction

[0020] In various embodiments, a document holder integrated with a document illuminator is described.

[0021] In one embodiment, the disclosed document holder includes the platen of the scanner operating in a constant velocity transport mode in which the platen and document illuminator remain stationary.

[0022] Constant velocity transport integrated illuminators enable scanning of moving documents passing the imaging position on a fixed platen. image 3 A document holder system 200 is shown that includes a constant velocity transport roller 210 disposed on a platen configured to accommodate a light source 220 as an integral part of the platen. Constant velocity transport may include at least rollers 210 operatively configured relative to platen 240 such that as image 3 The document sheet 205 is moved over the aperture 230 as shown in . Document sheets 205 may be automatically fed sheet by sheet by a document feeder from a stack of sheets in an input tray into paper path ...

Abstract

A light-transmissive constant velocity transport platen. A light source is an integral part of the light-transmissive platen forming a light guide illuminator. The constant velocity transport integrated illuminator uses total internal reflection within the light-transmissive platen as well as frustrated total internal reflection at extraction surfaces to direct light out from an aperture to a document translated by a constant velocity transport system. For point light source, the system uses a deflector to avoid hot spots in the illumination profile. The deflector is no longer needed when line source is used in the constant velocity transport integrated illuminator.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application discloses a constant velocity transport (CVT) platen with an integrated document illuminator for use in an image scanner for recording images from multiple sheets of material, such as paper. Background technique [0002] Scanners use different types of light sources to illuminate documents placed on a transparent surface called a platen. The quality of the scanned image depends inter alia on the quality of the light emitted by the document illuminator (including the light source) through the platen onto the document. Document illuminators are arranged in various ways adjacent to, such as beneath the platen, and these document illuminators may include components of one or more lamps comprising tungsten filaments and opposed reflectors lamps and fluorescent lamps. These arrangements can waste a considerable amount of space in the scanner, and in some cases it is difficult to adjust the distance from the document illuminator to t...
