Embodiment Construction

[0034] In order to fully understand the operation of the present invention, first a brief review of general location estimation in cellular networks.

[0035]The basic idea of the cellular network 10 shown schematically in Fig. 1 is to structure the network as a grid of cells 4A-J, where each cell 4A-J is an area covered by one radio base station 2A-J. Communication takes place via different radio resources. In order to avoid interference between the mobile phone 6 and the radio base stations 2A-J in neighboring cells, the communication between the mobile phone 6 and the base stations 2A-J uses different resources, ie slightly different configurations or settings eg frequencies or codes. The number of these resources or "configurations" is limited. In the GSM system, resources consist of a finite number of allowed carrier frequencies, and they are used to separate the communications of different cells. In WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) systems, resources ar...

Abstract

In a cellular communications network (10), additional control signals comprising virtual base station identification data are distributed in the radio system from well defined locations by e.g. transmitters (7A-G). Since there is a connection between each virtual base station identification data and the location from where it is transmitted, a mobile terminal (6) can use the information for improving its position estimation according to conventional procedures. No modifications of the mobile terminals (6) are therefore necessary. The mobile terminal (6) is not able to connect to the communications system (10) using the virtual base station identification data, since this data only is intended for position estimating purposes. In such a way, the devices for providing the additional information necessary for the improved position estimation can be made very simple and inexpensive.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to cellular communication systems, and in particular to the estimation of the position of mobile terminals in such systems. Background technique [0002] The possibility to determine the location of a mobile device has enabled application developers and wireless network operators to offer location-based and location-aware services. Examples of these are guidance systems, shopping assistants, friend finders and other information services that give mobile users information about their surroundings. [0003] In addition to commercial services, some governments have imposed requirements on network operators to be able to determine the location of emergency calls. For example, US government requirements (FCC E911) require that network operators must be able to determine the location of a certain percentage of all emergency calls. In terms of these requirements, the indoor environment is no different from the outdoor...
