Problems solved by technology

[0012] A common problem in inkjet printers (in particular solid inkjet printers or so-called phase change inkjet printers) that print based on image transfer components is that the paper may contaminate paper particles as it moves through the printer. Introduced into the machine internal environment where such contaminants may reach the nozzle surface of the print head causing temporary or permanent jetting deviations or interruptions

Embodiment Construction

[0023] In the embodiments disclosed is a print media shutter for protecting a print head printing on an image transfer member from particles associated with a print media, the shutter comprising a structure that provides To be positioned within the printing press below (i.e. below) the print medium and above (i.e. above) the printhead, and the structure has a first adhesive surface that, when positioned within the printing press, lies between above the print head.

[0024] In this embodiment, the structure may also include a second adhesive surface proximate to the image transfer member. The first and second adhesive surfaces may be different or identical, on the same side or on opposite sides of each other. The structure may comprise two surfaces at an angle to each other. This baffle embodiment may be used in an inkjet printer, which may use an image cylinder or a moving image transfer member (eg an image web, such as an image belt). The baffle may be generally positioned...

Abstract

A printing medium baffle for protecting printheads printing on an image transfer member from particulates associated with the printing medium. The baffle may have one or more adhesive surfaces.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system for protecting the surface of a printhead, particularly a solid inkjet printhead printing on an image transfer member, from contaminants. Background technique [0002] Inkjet printing systems have utilized an intermediate transfer inkjet recording method, such as disclosed in US Patent No. 5,389,958. The intermediate transfer surface is applied by means of an absorbent pad contained in the applicator assembly. Prior to imaging, the applicator is raised into contact with the rotating drum to apply or replenish the liquid intermediate transfer surface. [0003] Once the liquid intermediate transfer surface is applied, the applicator is retracted and the printhead ejects ink drops to form an ink image on the liquid intermediate transfer surface. The ink is applied in molten form (has been melted from its solid form). As the drum continues to rotate, the ink image solidifies on the liquid intermediate transfer s...
