Abstract

The invention relates to a method of encoding and decoding an image sequence by means of hierarchical temporal analysis. According to the invention, movement-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) is performed, the temporal filtering being replaced by intra mode encoding in order to obtain at least one low (L)- or high (H)-frequency image if the current image has a level of correlation with a preceding image that is below a threshold. The low (L)-frequency images obtained are subsequently adjusted to scale in order to be adapted in terms of energy to the images obtained by movement-compensatedtemporal filtering. The invention is characterised in that, at the end of the analysis, it comprises the following steps: selection of the images obtained by intra encoding of an image of the lower decomposition level with the additional condition, for the high-frequency images, said image originating from intra encoding; and calibration of the selected image, involving at least one step that is the reverse of the scale adjustment step. The invention also relates to the applications thereof in relation to video compression with temporal prediction.
