[0024] Thus, as mentioned above, ultrasound imaging has been used for many years to generate diagnostic images of the chest. Ultrasound systems have now been developed to produce three-dimensional (3D) images of the chest, unlike earlier systems. This is accomplished by scanning the chest with a moving array transducer. Array transducers emit and receive electronic guidance beams that scan a target plane without moving the transducer. As the array transducer moves in the vertical direction, it successively scans a planar sequence. These planes would be thought of as analogous to many playing cards aligned in a pile. Each playing card plane is a planar image, and many cards include a plurality of planar images aligned in parallel of three-dimensional objects. The data of this planar sequence will be used to render a three-dimensional (3D) image, as is known in the art.
