Area active backlight with steerable light source
a technology of backlight and area, which is applied in the direction of planar/plate-like light guides, lighting and heating apparatus, instruments, etc., can solve the problems of not being able to selectively control the light provided by the backlight 110 to different regions of the display, and absorbing a large amount of ligh

[0033]It is desirable to include an active backlight which selectively provides light to different regions of the display to improve the image quality. Such regions of the display may be as small as a pixel, or sub-pixel, or a fraction of a sub-pixel, but in general are significantly larger than a pixel and are preferably patterned so that it produces uniform light output for uniform input. In addition, being able to selectively reduce the backlight in different regions of the display also decreases the overall power consumption of the display. However, two dimensional backlights traditionally require a separate driver for each active unit, which is relatively expensive for a large display area.
[0034]A display may include a series (or plurality) of single light emitting diodes arranged in a parallel fashion along the edge of the display, or other light sources, each of which provides illumination to a one-dimensional striped region across the display. The light sources may likewise ...
