A medical device for providing retrograde venous perfusion to the cerebral vasculature for treatment of global or focal cerebral ischemia is disclosed. The device includes a catheter having an infusion port at its distal end, venous drainage port(s), and an expandable occluder disposed between the infusion port and drainage port(s). The catheter can be inserted into the superior vena cava or the internal jugular vein. The catheter is attached proximally to a pump and an oxygenator with or without a cooling system. Alternatively, the device includes two catheters, each having a lumen communicating with a distal infusion port and an occluder mounted proximal to the port. The catheters can be inserted into the internal jugular veins distal to jugular venous valves. Methods of using the devices to provide retrograde venous perfusion and isolated cerebral hypothermia are disclosed.

An apparatus for de-aering, oxygenating and controlling a temperature of blood in an extracorporeal blood circuit. The apparatus includes a housing, a manifold body, a heat exchanger, and an oxygenator. A blood inlet tangentially directs blood into a first chamber of the housing. The manifold body is disposed in a second chamber, and includes a core and a plurality of vanes that define channels. The heat exchanger is arranged around the manifold body, and the oxygenator around the heat exchanger. The channels are open to the heat exchanger. An established blood flow path includes rotational flow within the first chamber to separate air from the blood, generally longitudinal flow from the first chamber and along the channels, and generally radial flow through the heat exchanger and the oxygenator. With this construction, gross air removal occurs prior to the blood passing through the heat exchanger and oxygenator.

Miniaturized waste heat engine

A closed loop vapor cycle generated by a special device formed by heat transfer and a vapor expander it is utilized to convert waste heat from conventional power systems into additional thermodynamic work, thereby improving the overall power system efficiency. Superheated vapor (i.e. steam) is instantaneously produced inside special energy transfer apparatus where waste heat is converted into fluid energy with desired thermodynamic properties. The superheated vapor is then converted into mechanical energy through special work-producing units (expanders), thereby returning a significant fraction of the energy contained in the waste heat to the power system. When the power system under consideration is an internal combustion engine the energy contained in the exhaust gases (waste heat) is transferred back to the engine through one or more expanders directly or indirectly coupled with the engine load. The energy extracted from the waste heat can also be added back to the engine by an apparatus able to enhance the availability of oxygen (oxygenators) during the combustion. In this case, the engine also improves its dynamic response and reduces its production of toxic emissions. If the engine utilizes heavy fuels (i.e. diesel engines), this device completely eliminates the formation of the highly toxic particulate (black smoke), while significantly improving engine performance. The cost of the energy required to operate the device proposed in this invention is zero since it only recuperates and utilizes energy in the form of heat that is normally discharged into the environment.

During desorbing, the obtained by-product, namely nitrate-sulfur acid is collected by a storage tank and is an industrial chemical with wide uses. The system simultaneously realizes desulfurization and denitration in one set of device (complete equipment) and has high removal efficiency and no secondary pollution.
