System, method and apparatus are provided through which in some embodiments, a tool interface unit (TIU) of a medical navigation system or an integrated medical imaging and navigation system includes a wireless transceiver to communicate with a navigation computer in order to reduce or eliminate cabling between the TIU and the navigation computer. In some embodiments, the TIU is mounted to a side of a surgical table in order to reduce the possibility of contamination of the cables from a non-sterile environment. In some embodiments, the TIU is battery powered and includes a battery and a battery charger.

A method of performing a shoulder joint surgery involving a scapula having a glenoid cavity, a humerus and a humeral ball on a surgical table includes mounting a retractor support to the surgical table and positioning the retractor support about the shoulder joint. The skin and flesh layers proximate the shoulder joint are incised and the skin and flesh layers are manually retracted with a retractor. The retractor is secured in a selected position by attaching the retractor to the retractor support.

An overlay mattress has a plurality of internal elevating means, such as inflatable bladders, for raising selected portions of the mattress to achieve a wide range of patient positions. A fluid such as air may be supplied from a conventional surgical room air supply, a compressed canister, or a compressor to inflate the bladders. A fluid distribution system controls the flow of fluid to desired bladders. The overlay mattress may be used in conjunction with conventional surgical tables and mattresses. A thermal control means is also included in the overlay mattress to regulate a patient's body temperature. A pressure shifting means is also included to reduce the risk of bedsore formation.

Apparatus for use in an operating theatre equipped with a surgical table, comprises a lifting frame (12) attachable to the surgical table and adapted for lifting a body part of a subject undergoing a surgical procedure upon the surgical table, and comprising an upright support post (18) incorporating a jack (54), and a lifting arm (17) pivotally mounted upon the post, whereby the arm can be turned about the upright support post on thrust bearing (57) to either overhang the surgical table, or be pivoted away to permit access to the surgical table. The interface profile includes a plurality of interconnected curved surfaces formed along the entire outer edge of the patient support member for selective attachment to a range of medical accessory devices. The support interface includes a non-planar first connection area (72) having a recess (82) and a curved lip area (90) adapted to engage correspondingly formed surfaces (122, 126) on a medical accessory connector (110, 140). An imaging system includes a source and a detector that can be quickly and easily moved out of the way after scanning. During scanning, the actual paths that the source and detector travel are tracked, such as by an associated surgical navigation system tracking system. The actual locations of the source and detector during each x-ray image are used in the image reconstruction algorithm. Since the actual locations are used in the algorithm, the locations do not have to be as precisely controlled. In one embodiment, the source and detector are mounted proximate outer ends of first and second c-arm sections. The first and second c-arm sections are extendable to form a complete c-arm and retractable to a collapsed position when not in use. In the disclosed embodiment, the c-arm sections are mounted to a base or carriage under the patient support surface (such as the surgical table).

A shaped surgical retractor blade is used in a surgical retractor assembly. The shaped retractor blade is not formed of sheet material but rather is formed to have a non-uniform thickness between the tissue contacting side and the surgical arena side. The non-uniform thickness can be provided by a longitudinally running rib running between two recesses on surgical arena side of the retractor blade. The recesses provide openings through which the surgeon can better view the surgical arena. The rib provides additional bending strength to the retractor blade. The tissue contacting side of the blade can have a convex curvature, minimizing the possibility of tissue damage at the location that the blade contacts the tissue. The retractor blade can have a constant longitudinally extending section and a distal, tapering section. The uniquely shaped retractor blade can be formed, for instance, such as by injection molding a high tensile strength polymer material which provides desired optical/fluoroscopic/magnetic resonance imaging properties.

A surgical frame and a method for use thereof facilitates transfer of a patient from and to a surgical table/gurney. The surgical table includes a main beam positionable such that a surgical table/gurney with patient laying thereon can be positioned under the main beam. The main beam includes componentry for supporting a patent thereon, and the main beam can be rotated, raised/lowered, and tilted upwardly/downwardly to afford positioning and repositioning of the main beam to facilitate transfer of a patient from the surgical table/gurney to the main beam and transfer from the main beam to the surgical table/gurney.

A medical accessory clamping system includes a table and an accessory clamp. The table has an upper surface and a lower surface, a first ridge positioned on the upper surface and a second ridge positioned on the lower surface of the table. The accessory clamp has a first clamping member and a second clamping member coupled to but separate from the first clamping member wherein the clamping members define a cavity for receiving a portion of the table. The first and second clamping members have recesses for receiving said first and second ridges of the table, respectively. A uniquely styled clamp and a table are also disclosed.

A surgical arm rest or leg rest for supporting a patient's limb has concave tray or trough supported on a post member that extends downward. An elongated rod member situated below the tray with clamp member adjustably supports the post of the tray. A clamp member permits the rotation angle and tilt angle of the support post to be adjusted. An L-shaped support arm has a vertical arm portion adapted to be received into a support clamp mounted on the surgical table, and a horizontal arm that holds a sleeve member which supports the rod member. A locking lever on the sleeve member locks the rod member in place in the sleeve member.

A surgical table comprising a base and a patient support supported between opposed ends of the base, each opposed end including a pitch/roll assembly. The base is configured such that the patient support can be rolled and pitched relative to the opposed ends via the pitch/roll assemblies such that the roll axis of each pitch/roll assembly remains coaxial regardless of how the patient support is pitched or rolled relative to the base. The patient support includes an outer frame and an inner frame supported on, and displaceable relative to, the outer frame. The inner frame is further articulating about, and relative to, itself. The outer frame is rigid in that it does not change configurations.

A surgical table which includes a patient support surface 16 for receiving a patient, a vertically-movable support column connected to and supporting the patient support surface, and a pair of four-bar linkages for laterally tilting patient support surface relative to the support column. The support column includes a base that is mounted for vertical movement between a first position in which the surgical table is movable on rollers and a second position wherein the base contacts the floor to lock the position of the surgical table during a procedure. One or more trays may be pivotally connected to the patient support surface and selectively deployed to hold objects such as surgical instruments.

A computer-guided system for orienting an insert during a surgical procedure, the computer-guided system comprising:

a surgical table for supporting a patient, the surgical table being capable of movement about three axes;

a table inertial measurement unit for measuring movement of the surgical table;

a patient inertial measurement unit for measuring movement of the patient;

an insert inertial measurement unit for measuring movement of the insert; and

computational means for determining the relative positioning of the patient and the insert based upon movement of the surgical table, movement of the patient, and movement of the insert.

In order to increase the accuracy and speed of catheter reconstruction in surgical procedures such as an HDR prostate implant procedure, an automatic tracking system is provided preferably using an electromagnetic tracking device. The system uses a transmitter with a sensor used for catheter position. Due to substantial interference in the electromagnetic field from the surgical table, implant stepper/stabilizer etc, a calibration algorithm using a scattered data interpolation scheme is implemented to correct tracking location errors. The invention includes methods and systems used to carry out the methods.

A surgical table including: an upper platform for supporting a patient, the platform having a longitudinal axis extending from a first end of the platform to a second end of the platform; a base support; and, an elevator mechanism including scissor linkage members extending between and connecting the upper platform with the base support for moving the upper platform between a fully collapsed and a fully raised operating position relative to the base support. Each scissor linkage member is independently operable to raise or lower the upper platform either to move the upper platform such that it is parallel to the base support, or to lower or raise the first end of the platform independently of the second end of the platform and vice versa, causing the upper platform to tilt along its longitudinal axis.

A surgical instrument stabilizer system for securely holding virtually any instrument during any procedure, delivering vacuum when applicable, and yet allowing easy single-handed or voice activated repositioning by a user. The system utilizes opposing horizontal side-rails mounted to opposing sides of a surgical table, and opposing arms each slidably mounted on a side rail for global lengthwise positioning along the side rails. The arms carry a transverse beam at the foot of the operating table, and a flexible arm is movably mounted on the beam for global lengthwise positioning along the beam. Alternately, the flexible arm may be affixed directly to one of the existing horizontal side rails. The flexible arm leads to an instrument-supporting hand piece pivotally mounted for angular orientation of an instrument supported thereby. The flexible arm can be freely articulated to any position and locked in place. Thus, a supported instrument can be repositioned quickly and easily by single-handed or voice activated manipulation by a surgeon or surgical assistant, and locked in any position up and down along a vertical axis, forward and back, i.e, toward or away from the patient, and rotationally.

The invention discloses a stretcher vehicle capable of automatically and transversely moving a patient, and belongs to the technical field of medical instruments. The stretcher vehicle capable of automatically and transversely moving the patient comprises a stretcher vehicle and a transversely moving bed, wherein the transversely moving bed is arranged on a bed frame of the stretcher vehicle, is positioned by a safety baffle and a guardrail, and is driven to transversely move by a transversely moving device; and the transversely moving bed comprises a transversely moving bed body, a bed surface conveyor belt and a transverse bed surface conveyor belt driving device. When the patient is transferred from the stretcher vehicle to an operation table, the transversely moving device drives the transversely moving bed to be transversely moved to the middle of the operation table, then the transverse bed surface conveyor belt driving device transversely moves the patient lying on the bed surface conveyor belt to the operation table, and the position of the patient is not required to be changed, so that pains suffered by the patient when the patient is carried are reduced, and secondary injureto the patient is prevented. The stretcher vehicle is high in automation degree and simple and convenient to operate; the labor intensity of a medical worker is reduced; the patient can be transferred only by one person; and the stretcher vehicle is suitable for a hospital to transfer a seriously injured patient from an ambulance to the operation table or from an operation room to a hospital bed after the operation.

There is described method and apparatus for supporting a patient's body in a MR scanner, including supporting it to rotate about its longitudinal axis and cant about a point on the longitudinal axis. Also provided are method and apparatus for supporting a patient's head and neck and using a surgical head-holder. Yet another embodiment of the invention provides method and apparatus for attaching first and second stirrups to a member supporting the patient. According to yet another embodiment, the invention provides for keeping two or more different members for supporting a patient's body during a medical procedure conducted in conjunction with an MR scanner, wherein each member is adapted to be detachably inserted into a bore of the MR scanner, and wherein each member provides for a different patient support functionality, selecting one of the different members for use in a medical procedure, positioning a patient's body on the selected member, and engaging the member with the MR scanner such that the member is disposed at least in part in a bore of the scanner.

Methods and systems for registering a manipulator assembly and independently positionable surgical table are provided herein. In one aspect, methods include reading a fiducial marker on the surgical table with a sensor associated with the manipulator assembly and localizing the manipulator assembly and surgical table with respect to a common reference frame. Methods may further include translating a 3D configuration of the surgical table to a 2D frame of reference so as to estimate a 3D pose of the surgical table relative the manipulator assembly for use in coordinating movements therebetween.

Abdominal annular pack structure for gasless laparotory operation comprises an annular ring, a plurality of hooks and adjusting devices, a fixation ring and a stationary pole with an adjusting rod. The stationary pole is erected on one side of the operation table to settle the adjusting rod thereon in position. The adjusting rod is provided with a clamp at its one end for clutching the fixation ring in position. The fixation ring is disposed to encircle the annular ring surrounding the wound open on the patient belly part. Each adjusting device is connected respectively to its corresponding hook with a pulling string so as to apply a variable tensile force to the annular ring thereby able to adjust the size and shape of the wound. With this structure, the surgical operation may be carried out securely and perfectly without filling the gas (CO₂) to the abdominal cavity, and absolutely getting rid of the fear of any attack of complication to the patient.

A surgical table width extender having an angled tang structure for engaging the gap formed between a standard table and its stand-off-mounted side rail. The tang structure contacts portions of the rail and portions of the table edge to enhance the load-carrying capability of the table side rail assembly. The extender further provides its own stand-off-mounted rail and a quick release clamp for securing the extender to the table. The tang structure is formed to allow a single extender to be used on either side of a surgical table where the stand-offs are not evenly spaced apart. The extender body is formed from a lightweight, strong carbon fiber composite material. Further enhancements protect exposed corners of the extender and protect potential high stress surfaces. An angularly orientable attachment is provided for use when two width extenders are used simultaneously on opposite sides of the table. In a lowered, horizontal orientation the attachment acts as a table length extender. In a raised, upright orientation the attachment acts as a foot stop.
