Embodiment Construction

[0058] Throughout the figures, like reference characters indicate corresponding or similar functional parts.

[0059] The present invention relates to multi-hop networks such as packet radio multi-hop networks, and more particularly to an innovative forwarding scheme for multi-hop networks, called Multi-User Diversity Forwarding (denoted MDF).

[0060] The MDF scheme proposed by the present invention can be combined with any underlying routing determination protocol (such as the shortest path protocol for generating routing selection cost table or routing determination protocol more customized for diversity forwarding). Naturally, the present invention can be configured to be associated with other network-related functions such as topology control mechanisms.

[0061] The multi-user diversity forwarding (MDF) scheme proposed by the present invention integrates relevant aspects of at least two of the three lowest protocol layers. Generally, these three layers refer to the OSI ...

Abstract

The main aspect of the invention is based on the idea that by surveying those destinations and / or flows presented in the sending node (100) and choosing the relay direction by judicious choice of destinations and / or flows, it is possible to obtain Higher degrees of freedom in the forwarding process. In fact, the forwarding algorithm proposed by the present invention performs joint selection: i) selects a relay node among multiple relay candidate nodes; and ii) performs at least one of a) selecting a flow among multiple flows and b) selecting a Select a destination from one of the destinations. The sending node then selects from the sending queue (110) a set of messages destined for the selected destination and / or belonging to the selected flow, and finally transmits the selected message to the selected relay node (200). The joint selection process is often based on cost schedules and perhaps even forward schedules over geographic distance. However, aspects such as QoS (Quality of Service) and fairness criteria may also be taken into consideration during the selection process.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to communication networks, and more particularly to multi-hop networks and routing mechanisms in such networks. Background technique [0002] A protocol for effectively sharing a wireless medium among multiple users is generally embodied as a multiple access protocol, a channel access scheme, or a medium access scheme. As stated in [1], multiple access protocols can be divided into two main categories: contention-free protocols and contention-based protocols. [0003] A collision-free protocol is a protocol that ensures that a transmission succeeds at all times without interference from other transmissions. Collision-free transmission can be achieved by assigning channels to users either statically or dynamically. This is often denoted fixed scheduling and dynamic scheduling, respectively. The resulting benefit of precise coordination between sites is thought to provide high efficiency, but at the cost of comp...
