Abstract

A process and apparatus for drawing an optical fiber preform comprising: heating the preform to soften a region thereof; drawing the preform to stretch it; during the drawing step, at least one measuring point along the preform above, determining the diameter of the preform; and controlling the stretching step based on the determined diameter. In the stretching step, at least one geometric parameter of the preform is measured, and the position of the diameter measurement point is controlled according to the measured geometric parameter. The measurement of at least one geometric parameter of the preform includes determining the contour of at least a portion of the softened region, such as an image of the contour of the neck region.
