Embodiment Construction

[0026] A preferred embodiment is described below, wherein the device for writing a label on the surface of an object is an optical disc drive including a laser, wherein the object is a CD or DVD disc, and the provided label is a monochrome label.

[0027] By providing an optical disc whose surface has the ability to withstand a visible contrast or color change when a certain amount of light is applied to the surface, the visible change can be applied to the surface of the optical disc. The surface may be coated with one or more layers that exhibit this ability to interact with light, for example, by changing the chemical composition, changing the chemical structure, etc.

[0028] In order to provide visible changes in a predetermined area, such as Figure 1A The driving laser shown in the figure shows the current supplied to the laser so that the laser emits light 1 when receiving a current higher than a certain threshold 8 and does not emit light 2 for the supply current lower than...

Abstract

An apparatus and a method for writing a label on a surface of an object, such as on the top surface of an optical disk (CD, DVD, BIu Ray etc.) are disclosed. The label is written by using the laser in the optical pickup unit of the disk device. The laser light is emitted as a pulse train in order to reduce the thermal load on the laser. The pulse train is provided by controlling the supply current of the laser, and the radiation power of the laser is reduced to zero between two successive sub-pulses of the pulse train by turning off the laser between successive sub-pulses.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device and method for writing labels on the surface of an object, and more particularly to a device and method for writing visible labels on the upper surface of an optical disc by using a laser in an optical disc device. Background technique [0002] By providing a sticker (such as a label affixed by a laser printer) to the upper surface, information about the content on the recordable optical disc (such as data type, title, or other labels) can be provided to the upper surface surface. Optionally, handwritten notes can be provided to mark the content on the disc. [0003] The use of self-adhesive labels involves printers, and it can be tedious to provide accurate alignment of the self-adhesive labels with the upper surface of the disc, however, for aesthetic reasons, handwritten notes may not be attractive. [0004] In the published US application US2003 / 0161224, a method and device for directly forming labels on the optic...
