Apparatus and method for improving chamfer quality of disk edge surfaces with laser treatment

A carbon dioxide laser is used as a non-mechanical means for smoothing and polishing the as-cut chamfer surface at the edge of the disk. Applying laser radiation to the glass surface causes transient melting and resolidification. Due to surface tension effects, the glass resolidifies to produce a surface that is significantly smoother than it was before irradiation. If scratches or abrasive marks are present on the glass surface prior to irradiation, the irradiation process "polishes out" these defects as long as they are not too deep. At a wavelength near 10 mum, the penetration depth of the radiation into the glass is approximately 1 mum. Therefore, scratches and defects of this order of magnitude are eliminated. The quality of the resulting modified chamfer surface is far superior to the original mechanically ground and polished surface.

Closure unit, mold for producing same, and dispenser-container incorporating a closure unit

A closure unit for selectively closing a package of wipes or the like is formed as an integral unit typically in or close to the closed position, and has a flap hinged with respect to a frame defining an opening for enabling dispensing of the wipes or the like therethrough. Break lines between the flap and the frame enable the flap to be torn from the frame at first use, and suitable positive locking means enable the flap to be reclosed with respect to the frame. The structure of the unit is such that no portion of the flap substantially overlaps any portion of the frame when the unit is initially formed, and thus then unit may be formed in or close to the closed position, particularly from sheet material.

Apparatus and method of displaying recording

A controller makes a demultiplexer select a transport stream corresponding to user's operation, and supplies it to a VTR through an I / F circuit. The I / F circuit of the VTR gives the transport stream to a recording / reproducing unit for recording, and transmits EIT data to a TV to supply them to a program guide GUI generating part. The GUI generating part generates GUI data based on the inputted EIT data, and makes them stored in a cassette memory using a cassette memory unit of the VTR. At the time of reproduction, GUI data read by the cassette memory unit is supplied to the program guide GUI generating part, and a program guide display of programs recorded on a cassette tape is displayed. In this manner, guide information on programs recorded on a cassette tape is automatically displayed.

Device and method for determining a reproduction position

A device for determining a reproduction position of a source of sound for audio-visual reproduction of a film scene from a plurality of individual pictures with regard to a reproduction surface having a predetermined width and a projection source having a projection reference point comprises means for providing a recording position of the source of sound, a camera position during recording, and an aperture angle of the camera during recording. In addition, provision is made of means for transforming the recording position of the source of sound to a camera coordinate system, the origin of which is defined, in relation to a camera aperture, to obtain a recording position of the source of sound in the camera coordinate system. Means for calculating the reproduction position of the source of sound in relation to the projection reference point determines whether the aperture angle of the camera equals a predetermined aperture angle, and whether or not a source of sound is located within the visual range of the camera. If the current aperture angle of the camera differs from the predetermined standard aperture angle, the reproduction position of the source of sound is spaced toward a viewer, or away from the viewer, by a distance which depends on the ratio of the standard aperture angle to the current aperture angle. Hereby, automatable sound-source positioning is achieved so as to provide not only a visually realistic, but also an acoustically realistic situation in a reproduction room using wave-field synthesis methods.
