Problems solved by technology

Due to the delicate nature of the IOL, there is a risk that the nurse and / or surgeon will inadvertently damage the IOL and / or incorrectly load the IOL into the infusion device leading to implant failure
Handling and / or loading the IOL directly into the injector by a nurse and / or surgeon is therefore not ideal

Embodiment Construction

[0026] The present invention relates to a preloaded infusion device for injecting an IOL into the eye. The term "preloaded" is used herein to mean that the packaging component of the infusion device includes the IOL disposed therein. It is therefore not necessary to directly manipulate the IOL and load it into the injection device.

[0027] The essential components of infusion device 10 include proximal body portion 12, plunger 20, distal nozzle portion 14, and shuttle member 16, which fit together at the time of surgery to prepare device 10 for delivery of IOL 30 therethrough . The IOL 30 is preloaded into the shuttle part 16 of the device, which is packaged in a dry state or in a solution-filled bottle 11 (FIG. 2a,b) in an aqueous state to allow the IOL during transport and storage. Keep in a hydrated state. Whether the IOL is packaged for storage in a dry or wet state depends on the type of material from which the IOL is made. Examples of IOL materials that can be packa...

Abstract

Apparatus and method for preloading an intraocular lens in a component of an injector device. The intraocular lens is positioned in a shuttle which is sealed in a vial of storage solution. The vial cover is releasably attached to the shuttle. At the time of use, the surgeon opens the vial by removing the cover and shuttle together from the vial. While holding the cover, the surgeon or nurse attaches the shuttle to the proximal body section whereupon the vial cover is released from the shuttle. The distal nozzle section is then attached to the proximal body section which completes the device assembly. The plunger is advanced to express the IOL from the distal tip of the distal section.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to ophthalmic medical devices and methods. More particularly, the present invention relates to devices and methods for injecting intraocular lenses (IOLs) into the eye, wherein the IOLs may be conveniently preloaded in and packaged with an injector device. Background technique [0002] IOLs are intraocular lenses used to replace the natural lens of the eye when the natural lens develops cataracts or other diseases. IOLs are also sometimes implanted in the eye to correct refractive index errors of the eye, in which case the natural crystal may remain in the eye with the implanted IOL. The IOL can be placed in the anterior or posterior chamber of the eye. IOLs are available in a variety of configurations and materials. Some common IOL styles include: so-called open loop haptics, which include: a three-piece with an optic and two haptics mounted on and extending from the optic; a one-piece style, where the optic and the ha...
