Problems solved by technology

The second problem is that the fibers cationized due to the addition of excess cationic starch will not be able to absorb other cationic additives normally added to pulp such as sizing agents and retention aids

Embodiment

[0031] The method was evaluated using ten different formulation samples 1-10. The furnish used was a mixture of groundwood and kraft pulp in a ratio of 2.5:1. For six samples only the fiber portion of the furnish was treated with polymer, for the remaining four samples the entire furnish was treated with polymer. Clay is used as filler, and the paper product has a filler content of 30% or 50%. For comparison, some samples were treated with cationic starch in one step, while other samples were treated with cationic starch and CMC in successive steps according to the invention.

[0032] The three sequential polymer processing steps are:

[0033] I. cationic starch is added in the batching sample;

[0034] II. Adding CMC to the batch sample; and

[0035] III. Add cationic starch to the batch sample.

[0036] The charge of the furnish was measured after each addition and the amount of polymer added in each subsequent step was determined from these measurements. The polymer w...

Abstract

A process for producing paper from a furnish comprising fillers and fibers, wherein the furnish is treated with polymers in at least three steps and said furnish contains fillers in such an amount that the paper product obtained by the process contains at least 15% by weight of fillers. The invention also relates to a paper product produced according to the process of the present invention.

Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a process for the production of high filler content paper products in which the furnish used is treated with polymers in multiple stages. Background of the invention [0002] In the papermaking process, attempts have been made to find ways to produce paper at a reduced cost. Since fillers are cheaper than fibers, one approach is to increase the filler content of the paper and thus enable lower fiber content in the paper. In addition to being economically beneficial, fillers also improve the opacity and printability of the paper. However, a large amount of filler in paper will reduce the strength of the paper. Therefore, there is a balance between the reasonable amount of filler added and the required strength of the produced paper. Currently, the amount of filler used in paper varies according to the grade of paper, for example newsprint can have a filler content as high as about 12-14%. For existing publication paper and fine paper g...
