Problems solved by technology

For example, since the length of system information sent by different cells may vary greatly, the mobile station may mistakenly interpret a long interruption in user data transmission time caused by excessively long system information as poor quality of service

[0024] figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a mobile communication network, generally designated 100, in accordance with the present invention. The mobile communication network 100 shown is associated with a fixed network 600 and includes at least one wireless handheld communication device 200 , a wireless cellular network 219 including a plurality of base station subsystems (BSS) 400 , and a core network 500 . The communication network 100 is preferably configured as a GSM network. However, the invention is not limited to GSM networks. For example, the BSS 400 in the wireless cellular network 219 can use the same radio access technology (RAT) type, such as pure GSM or pure code division multiple access (CDMA), or can use a mixture of different RATs, such as GSM, Universal System for Mobile Communications (UMTS), CDMA, Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and any other mix of RATs.

Abstract

A method of cell selection in a wireless cellular network having a plurality of radio system cells involves determining a bandwidth indication for data communication through each of a serving cell and at least one neighbouring cell to the serving cell. The bandwidth indication comprises an indication of the capacity for data communication through each cell. One of the cells is then selected for packet-based communication in accordance with the determined bandwidth indications.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention described herein generally relates to a method for selecting a cell of a wireless system in a wireless cellular network. In particular, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for reselecting a packet radio communication cell. Background technique [0002] The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular radio network was originally designed to support circuit-switched services such as voice telephony. Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is a superset of General Packet Radio Services that provides the capability to exchange packet user data over GSM. Typically, GPRS, EDGE, and other wireless data communication protocols are used to transfer data through applications such as business and scientific software such as electronic mail (e-mail), calendar updates, file transfers, and Internet browsing. [0003] The GSM specification defines an algorithm for reselecting cells of the radio system. According to...
