Embodiment Construction

[0010] PRE typically has a filling section and a compounding section. The packing section typically includes a conveying screw into which some raw material is continuously fed. The conveying screw conveys the material into the compounding section. The compounding section consists of a driven main shaft and a number of planetary spindles rotating around the main shaft inside a roller barrel with an internal helical gear drive. The rotational speed of the main shaft, and thus the rotational speed of the planetary mandrels, can vary and is one parameter to be controlled during the compounding and bulk polymerization process. The material is circulated between the main shaft and the planetary mandrel, or between the planetary mandrel and the helical gear drive in the roller section, to distribute the material and form a homogeneous composition.

[0011] A wide range of coatings can be produced using the PRE process of the present invention, such as, but not limited to, release c...

Abstract

A process including the steps of: providing a planetary roller extruder having a plurality of compounding sections including a main spindle surrounded by and intermeshed with a plurality of planetary spindles; introducing monomers and initiator into a first compounding section; producing a homogeneous composition; heating the composition to initiate free-radical polymerization; introducing monomers and initiator into one or more of the remaining compounding sections and continuing the polymerization; discharging the polymerized composition; and optionally, taking a portion of the composition discharged from the planetary roller extruder and returning it to the first compounding section.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 761,535, filed January 24, 2006, which is hereby incorporated by reference. Background of the invention [0002] The present invention relates to a continuous bulk polymerization process using a planetary roller extruder (PRE) to prepare compositions such as, but not limited to, adhesive compositions. Conventional batch bulk (eg limited solvent or water) processes for producing adhesives by free radical polymerization are known. Typically, the reactor vessel (eg, a stirred tank) is jacketed and a cooling medium is provided so that heat generated during the exothermic reaction can be removed from the reactor vessel. At low conversion rates, this conventional approach is somewhat effective; however, at high conversion rates and associated high viscosities, heat transfer surfaces often foul, thereby losing temperature control and accelerating r...
