Embodiment Construction

[0179] The flow dynamics in all embodiments of the present invention are such that the outer surface of the glass sheet is formed from thoroughly mixed raw glass that exits the center of the glass flow into the forming apparatus and, therefore, does not contact the refractory material or refractory metal surface. This produces the highest possible surface quality. Such pristine surfaces are mainly used in the production of LCD / TFT semiconductor displays. Furthermore, the flow dynamics in all embodiments of the invention are such that the flow of wedge-forming molten glass to the bottom of the forming structure is substantially uniform across the width of the forming wedge.

[0180] "Glass sheet forming apparatus" (US Patent No. 3,338,696), generally designed for use in an "overflow process," relies on specially shaped forming structures to distribute glass to form glass sheets of uniform thickness. The basic shape of this forming structure is described in detail in US Patent...

Abstract

The present invention discloses improved methods and apparatus for forming sheet glass. In one embodiment, the invention introduces a counteracting force to the stresses on the forming structure in a manner such that the thermal creep which inevitably occurs has a minimum impact on the glass flow characteristics of the forming structure.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to the invention disclosed in Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 751,419, filed December 15, 2005, entitled "OVERFLOW DOWNDRAW GLASS FORMINGMETHOD AND APPARATUS" . Priority is claimed here under 35 USC § 119(e) of the US Provisional Application, which is incorporated herein by reference. [0003] This application is a continuation-in-part of co-pending U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 11 / 006,251, filed December 7, 2004, entitled "OVERFLOW DOWNDRAW GLASS FORMINGMETHOD AND APPARATUS" , which is filed on August 8, 2002 and published on May 10, 2005 as a divisional application for U.S. Patent No. 6,889,526 entitled "OVERFLOW DOWNDRAW GLASS FORMING METHOD AND APPARATUS (overflow down-drawing glass forming method and device) )", which claims priority to an invention disclosed in one of the following provisional applications: [0004] 1) Provisional Application No. 60 / 310,989, filed August 8, 2001, entitled "...
