Embodiment

[0162] Microbial strains and culture conditions

[0163] Fungal isolates were grown on potato dextrose agar (PDA, Difco Laboratories, Detroit, MI). Bacterial strains such as Agro6acterium tumefaciuns, Agrobacterium rhizogenes, Acidovorax avenae, Brenneriaquercina, Burkholderia cepacia, Carrot soft rot Owen Erwinia carotovora subsp.carotovora, Erwinia chrysanthemi, Erwinia herbicola, Pantoea herbicola, Pseudomonas rugosa corrugate) strain 0782-6, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas syringae pv.syringae, Rathayibacter tritici, Xanthomonas campestris Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris B-24 strain B-24 or Xanthomonas campestris pv. translucens were also on nutrient agar (NA, Dick Laboratories, Detroit, MI) grow.

[0164] Rich solids containing 3g yeast extract, 200g potato extract, 20g bacto-maltose extract, 1g bacto-peptone, 60g sucrose, 15g bacto-agar, 1 teaspoon molasses and 3.75g ground oatmeal per liter of water Ganoderma lucidum and L. sulphureus cultures were grown ...

Embodiment 2

[0204] Preparation of compositions for use in plants

[0205] Compositions of the invention for application to plants may be prepared by filtration to remove solids followed by dilution with water. Typically, purification methods are additionally employed to remove substantially all cell-derived material. This can be achieved, for example, by centrifugation, sedimentation, gel filtration or dialysis to remove cellular debris. Using these or other conventional methods, materials having molecular weights greater than about 100,000 may be employed. Additional work-up and purification steps such as, for example, treatment with activated carbon or charcoal can be used to remove lipophilic and / or colored substances. Similarly, the aqueous solution can be extracted with a water-immiscible organic solvent to remove lipophilic species.

[0206] Alternatively, surfactants may be added to increase efficacy on foliage or fruit. Other nutrients and adjuvants such as urea ammonium nit...

Embodiment 3

[0209] for plants

[0210] The partially purified compositions described above are then applied directly to the plant or plant part to be protected by conventional usage and equipment to reduce phytopathogen infection that may damage the plant or plant product. For example, the composition can be diluted to a suitable volume for spraying, and can be sprayed on plants, soil, or both. Routine methods for determining the required rates are known and can be used to guide the user in determining the appropriate dilution to control the target pest without injuring the plant or crop.

[0211]Alternatively, the compositions may be used for soil irrigation or spraying, or they may be prepared as solid formulations by concentration and then mixed into the soil surrounding young seeds, pumped seedlings or formed plants. They can also be used to treat the annulus around plant seeds or transplanted seeds during planting, allowing the composition to mix into the surrounding soil against ...

Abstract

The invention provides biologically active compositions comprising oligosaccharides, and which are produced by growing a fungal culture, and are at least partially purified for use. The compositions of the invention have antibacterial, antifungal and nematicidal activity, and are thus useful to reduce the impact of such pathogens on growing plants, to reduce the occurrence of such pathogens on surfaces and in substances, and to treat infections caused by such pathogens in animals and humans. The invention also provides methods for producing such compositions from certain fungal cultures.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 704,824, filed August 1, 2005, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to novel compositions having activity against microorganisms and other pathogens; said compositions are produced from certain species of Basidiomycetes fungi. The present invention provides sugar-containing compositions having antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic organisms, including nematodes, fungi and bacteria. The invention also provides culture conditions capable of increasing the basidiomycete fungi to produce biologically active substances, and one of the methods for using these compositions to protect plants from plant pathogens. Background technique [0004] Some fungi are known to be toxic or hallucinogenic. It has been reported that metabolites produced by some fungi have antimicrobial activity against...
